Jomsom Muktinath Trek 10 Days

Jomsom Muktinath Trek is an exciting trek in the Annapurna and Mustang regions of Nepal. This is the most popular trekking region, attracting over 75% of all trekkers (more than 30.000 annually).

The Jomsom Trek is indeed a classical trek, basically the final third of the Annapurna Circuit, follows the Kali Gandaki Valley between the soaring peak of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri. Finally, it emerges to the north of the main Himalayan range, on the dry, desert- like Tibetan Plateau. A several days walk beyond Jomsom, takes you the final destination, Muktinath, the famous pilgrimage site for both Hindu and Buddhists. To the Hindus, Muktinath is sacred as the place of salvation. They believe that to wash in the water here guarantees salvation after death. The Hindu god Brahma is thought to have lit the eternal flames that still burn at Muktinath. To the Buddhists it is a place that the great sage Guru Rimpoche (Padmasambhava) meditated at, and to all, it is the source of fossilized ammonites, known locally as shaligras that are the found all along the upper reaches of the Kali Gandaki. The scenery changes significantly between Tatopani and Lete Khola. Pine forests crowed in the trail and the villages take on a quite different appearance. The best example of unique architecture is to be found at the village of Marpha. Jomsom is best known its airport and district Head quarter of the Mustang District.

Kali Gandaki Valley Trek 11 Days.

Kaligandaki Valley (Jomsom - Muktinath) area is situated in north of Pokhara. One of the famous names of Himalayan Rivers, the Kali Gandaki raises in Mustang an enclave of Nepal poking into Tibet on the other side of the Himalaya. Here it is a flat and braided river flowing in an arid open valley and cuts one of the deepest gorges in the world between Mt. Daulagiri height 8167m to the west and Annapurna 8091m to the east.

Our trek begins by crossing the green, fertile foothills of the Himalaya, through small farming villages, terraced hillsides, rhododendron and bamboo forests, before ascending to the pass at Ghorapani. An early morning excursion to the top of Poon Hill (3193m) will provide splendid dawn views of the Kali Gandaki Valley, Dhaulagiri and the Annapurna Mountains. Our route alongside the mighty Kali Gandaki River passes between Annapurna 1 and Dhaulagiri, both over 8000 metres high. Described as the world’s deepest valley, the Kali Gandaki has for centuries been utilized as a major trading route through Mustang to the borders of Tibet. At Tukuche we head off the main trail and head to the spectacular Dhaulagiri Icefall. As we continue north towards Mustang the scenery changes dramatically, the riverbed widens and the landscape becomes barren, dusty and much drier. On reaching Muktinath we explore its famous Hindu temple and make an excursion to the base of the Thorung La Pass. Returning to Jomsom, we will take our flight back.

The exotic horse/mules caravans, with melodious bells that echo over great distance and wondrous plumes and headdresses on the lead horse, are reminiscent of ancient Tibet.
